The paper shows that the development of pretonic vocalism in South Russian dialects is directly conditioned by changes occurring in the rhythmic and prosodic structure of the phonetic word. It is the rhythmic structure of the word that is immediately involved in the formation of the articulatory programme, which in turn determines the main regularities of the linear sound sequence. In these dialects a consistent link between segmental and suprasegmental levels has been observed. Articulatory and acoustic features of pretonic vowels cannot be separated from the prosody of the utterance, while tendencies in the development of vowel systems can only be revealed from the perspective of speech prosody

Savinov Dmitrii

The dialect of Gammalsvenskby is the only surviving Scandinavian dialect in the territory of the former Soviet Union. Due to the complete absence of studies into the present-day state of the dialect, the most urgent task is to collect, classify and publish the factual material. The paper introduces all available data on the suffixal formation of nouns in the present-day dialect. The sources of the research are interviews with speakers of the conservative variant of the dialect recorded by the author during fieldwork in the village.

Aksenov Aleksei

The paper looks at the lyrical cycle, which at the beginning of 20th century became a genre. Its original genre semantics, formed in symbolist poetry, was the demiurge myth. Gradually the mythological content faded if not evanesced completely. However, the harmonisation of the world remained a semantic pivot of the lyrical cycle. The article considers the motifs of secrecy and concealment and their function in Jane Austen’s narrative. Among the traditional variations of these motifs that have been radically transformed in her novels one can distinguish the «compromising secrets» (such as seducement, elopement, clandestine engagement, etc.). These motifs in Austen’s novels are always multifunctional and the necessity for concealment is often regarded as morally ambivalent and fl exible.
